Description:
Delve deeper into Portland with the latest guide in the GrassRoutes series. Go ahead . . . taste that Vietnamese-French sandwich, or get out and help weed gardens in a public P-patch and meet some locals. Have a splurge dinner made by a chef who grows her own greens, and then stay up late at a poetry reading. Our guide points travelers to an eco-urban adventure that reveals a new look at Portland — a city chock-full of bustling, eccentric neighborhoods. The foundation of each GrassRoutes guide is the actual experiences of local writers who offer up annotated listings of places to volunteer, encourage visitors to take the bus, and highlight places in the city to find inspiration.

Imbibe chapter:

Bye and Bye

Punk tunes pumping from the jukebox and the nicotine waft seeping in from the backyard patio, Bye and Bye is southern comfort hipster style. The barbecue is breaded or barbecue drenched tofu and vegan macaroni and cheese, black-eyed peas and salty, spicy greens. The beer is organic microbrew and the namesake cocktail is served in Ball jars. It's the kind of place that sucks you in-- lord knows I’m happy to while away the hours hanging here when I’m in the mood for a pumped-up crowd. SB

Stay Up Late chapter:

Voodoo Doughnut

After Voodoo works its magic, doughnuts become a thing of beauty, of cultural importance, and of romantic commitment. Yes, romantic commitment. For a mere $157, Voodoo employees (certified to marry couples) will provide a legal tying of the knot, as well as doughnuts and coffee for 10 witnesses. But the reason most come to Voodoo is to satisfy a late night craving for some unconventional doughnuts. Try the ever-popular bacon maple bar--a sugar crystal-covered doughnut with two strips of bacon set in the syrupy glaze. You might gorge on the Memphis Mafia Fritter, stuffed with bananas, and drizzled with melted chocolate and peanut butter, or some equally divine vegan doughnuts. Come in the first Friday of the month at midnight to take the ultimate challenge: how many fried rings you can gobble down. For those more into the speed-eating thing, take the Tex-ass challenge; the current champ had downed one of these plate-sized glazed giants in under 90 seconds, in case you were counting. SB
